
Stoke Newington Church Street property survey 1890-2017 by Amir Dotan
In my talk I guided the audience through my recent research, which traced the history of every building on Stoke Newington Church Street. This research paints a vivid picture of the changing commercial landscape over the decades as tobacconists, tailors, and bootmakers made way for manufacturing, sewing machine repair shops, and later restaurants, cafes, and estate agents. I shared insights, trends, and stories of different shops from the late Victorian period onwards.

The birth of the Garden City Movement in Stoke Newington by Ken Worpole
On 3 December 1898 at Rectory Road Congregational Church in Stoke Newington Ebenezer Howard gave his first public lecture on his proposal for a ‘Garden City’, an idea that became one of the most influential town planning concepts throughout the world in the 20th century. Local writer and social historian Ken Worpole discussed the religious and political milieu of Stoke Newington, where Howard lived for many years, as a key influence on his thinking and his ideas for shaping a better world.
