28.11.2016 – Stoke Newington History Talks #1: Ghostsigns, Photo Mashups & Pleasure Grounds

My talk showcased my latest work, which features archival images superimposed on their contemporary settings, and explained why I am so dedicated to documenting the area that has become my home.

Pleasure grounds by Lee Jackson

Lee Jackson, author of Dirty Old London and creator of http://www.victorianlondon.org, presented his current research into Victorian entertainment. In this talk, he focused on Highbury Barn, a local ‘pleasure garden’ that was demonised and demolished in the 1870s.

Stoke Newington’s Ghostsigns by Sam Roberts

Ghostsigns researcher, tour guide, writer, and archivist Sam Roberts shared some of the material from his local ghostsigns walking tour, providing insights into the history conveyed through the fading paint on Stoke Newington’s walls. Sam also discussed his efforts to increase people’s understanding and appreciation of these signs, many of which are considered antiques.
