The Stoke Newington Cage Bird Society. This headed paper, received by Stoke Newington Borough Council on 28 June 1967, gives a glimpse of one of the many local societies that once formed part of community life in the borough. Find out the history of every shop in Stoke Newington Church Street since the 1840s. Wow! 9,000 followers. It’s great to see so much interest in the history of Stoke Newington. 1906 - The White Hart, 69 High Street, Stoke Newington. Wynne Edwin Baxter, who lived at 170 Stoke Newington Church St was the Coroner who conducted the inquests on most of the victims of the Whitechapel Murders of 1888 to 1891 including three of the victims of Jack the Ripper in 1888, as well as on Joseph Merrick, the “Elephant Man”. Allen Road used to be a bustling commercial street boasting 50 shops and 4 pubs in its heyday. Here are some of them in 1880. Today there is one pub and 4 shops in Allen Road. The rest were converted to residential properties. Church Row, Stoke Newington Church Street, comprised nine grand houses built c. 1700 on the site of William Patten’s Tudor manor house. One was demolished to extend the churchyard, and the rest were demolished in 1935 to make way for new municipal buildings and a reference library, which opened in 1937. The Allen family in the back garden of Stoke Lodge, 186 Lordship Road, Stoke Newington c. 1900. A nice follow-up to yesterday’s post about the future of Anvil House in Matthias Road. 1906 - Central Society for Women’s Suffrage public meeting poster. Library Hall, Church Street, Stoke Newington. Ad for Kynaston Dairy, 53 Kynaston Road, Stoke Newington. Ad for Bon Marchè, 28-36 Stoke Newington High Street. The Wesleyan Methodist Church in Green Lanes opposite Petherton Road. It was pulled down in 1968 following fire, though it was already due to be demolished due to dry rot. Newington Green Bridge used to be on the right where the New River went underground from Aden Terrace. 109-115 Stoke Newington Church Street, 1953. 1981 ad for the newly opened Fox’s Wine Bar in 176 Stoke Newington Church Street. It was later renamed The Fox Reformed. It closed in 2015.
