‘Windows Into the Past’ is a project that features paper “plaques” displayed in shop windows along Stoke Newington Church Street, each listing the various businesses that have traded there over the years. Inspired by my Stoke Newington Church Street property survey, which traces the history of every shop on the street, this initiative aims to bring the area’s commercial history to life and connect locals with the stories of their community.
Over the years, the survey has inspired various initiatives to make its content accessible and spread awareness of the street’s fascinating history. Following my book, The History of Every Shop in Stoke Newington Church Street, this latest project has seen 51 shops, nearly half the street, join in during the run-up to Christmas 2024 by displaying these plaques in their windows.
I offered the plaques for free to business owners I knew or shops I thought might be interested, so I didn’t try to cover the entire street. If any shops I skipped would like one, I’d be more than happy to prepare a plaque for them at no cost.
This project is about celebrating the street’s rich history and encouraging people to appreciate the stories behind the shops they pass every day.
