Walford Road Synagogue began as the New Dalston Synagogue in 1912, initially located at Blanche Hall, a former events venue at 99 Belgrade Road, on the corner of Wordsworth Road near St. Matthias Church. Albion Road, Stoke Newington. Then & Now: Stoke Newington Church Street. Then & Now: Stoke Newington Station. It opened in 1872. The ticket office was rebuilt in 1975. A rare survival from 7 Stoke Newington Church Street has surfaced on eBay. The New River in Clissold Park. This man-made canal opened in 1613 to bring drinking water from Hertfordshire to London. It was shortened in 1946 and now ends at the East Reservoir in Lordship Road. Stoke Newington parish boundary post (marked in a map as B.P) in Clissold Park near Green Lanes. Dr. James Richardson Spensley (1867-1915), born in 2 Lordship Terrace, Stoke Newington, is considered one of the “Fathers of Italian football” for his pivotal role in establishing the sport in Genoa. Clissold House, originally built in the 1790s for merchant Jonathan Hoare, is a Grade II listed mansion set within what is now Clissold Park.
