The imposing ‘Castle’ New River Pumping Station in Green Lanes was built in 1854–56 following the Metropolis Water Act 1852, which required water supplied for domestic use to be filtered and made provision for covered storage. Stoke Newington Church Street in 2001 - Part 2. Petherton Road takes its name from the village of Petherton in Somerset, the birthplace of Henry Rydou, whose family owned the Highbury New Park Estate. Clissold House in 1876, when it was home to the Rev. Augustus Clissold and his wife, Eliza. Eliza inherited the house following the death of her father, William Crawshay, in 1834. The following year, she married Augustus Clissold, curate of neighbouring St Mary’s. Eliza died in 1877, followed by Augustus in 1882. A pre-1917 street sign bearing an ‘N’ postcode near Bethune Road, close to the north-eastern boundary between the former Metropolitan Boroughs of Stoke Newington and Hackney. Stoke Newington Parish, and later the borough, extended northwards as far as Hermitage Road, Eade Road and Amhurst Park. The 2nd oldest residential properties in Stoke Newington, built in 1714. Following renovation in the mid-20th century, no. 171 was named Sisters Place and no. 173 Sweetapple House. Sisters Place was originally the name of the row comprising nos. 1 to 11. Sarah Sweetapple’s Quaker girls’ school was housed in “The Laurels”, which once stood on the site now occupied by nos. 163-167. The first of Stoke Newington Borough’s two Coats of Arms, used between 1900 and 1934. The end of a long-running local saga at 73 Lordship Road. Yesterday I saw children leaving the newly completed Viznitz Cheder school, marking the end of more than two decades of uncertainty over the future of St Mary’s Lodge and its site. Stoke Newington Church Street in 2001 - Part 1. Willow Lodge, 67 Lordship Road, Stoke Newington. It stood where Avigdor Mews is today. Then & Now: Halstead House, 201 Stoke Newington Church Street. It was demolished in 1931 when the Church St/Albion Rd junction was widened. Albion House now stands on the site. It also resulted in the Rose & Crown being demolished and rebuilt opposite its original location. Lady Mary Abney (1676–1750), Lady of the Manor of Stoke Newington and one of the figures who shaped the area in the early 18th century.
