A beautifully preserved sign from the 1880s has adorned the interior of 188 Stoke Newington High Street for decades, when the shop was occupied by W. A. Higgs, a tea importer. Looking forward to attending two talks this Sunday at the @hackneyhistoryfest in Sutton House, by two former guest speakers from my Stoke Newington History Talks series (https://stokenewingtonhistory.com/stoke-newington-history-talks). 163 Stoke Newington Church St when it was John Pollock, bootmaker. John Pollock traded at no. 163 in the 1910s to 1920s, before it became Alfred Stockley, boot and shoe repair, until the late 1960s. Stoke Newington High Street, looking north towards Stamford Hill. Stoke Newington Road looking south. The imposing Devonshire Square Baptist Church stood on the corner of Walford Road, next to the Walford pub (later renamed Yucatan Bar). Further up the road are the domes of the Apollo Picture House, which opened in 1913. It closed in 1983 and was later converted into a mosque and a restaurant. Stoke Newington Road corner of Beatty Road. West Hackney Church on the right was built between 1821-24. It was designed by Sir Robert Smirke who designed the British Museum. It was hit with high explosive bombs on 18/19th Sep 1940 and was destroyed. A new church was built on the site in 1960. A wall-mounted shop clock with branding, now a remnant of Church St. Electronics, a television and audio retailer that operated at 44 Stoke Newington Church Street. The shop traded there in the 1990s (possibly the late 1980s) and closed in 2003. Here’s a conceptual digital restoration of the original sign on the former Stoke Newington Borough’s post-war Civil Defence Headquarters, built in the early 1950s on Lordship Terrace next to the Electricity Substation. Stoke Newington’s Town Hall in Church Street was designed in 1934 by John Reginald Truelove (1886-1942); former army captain who designed several cemeteries including Noyelles-sur-mer. He won competitions for Memorials to the Missing at Le Touret and Vis-en-Artois Cemeteries. Digital colourisation of the Saloon Bar in the Shakespeare pub at 57 Allen Road, 1922. Clissold Park, Stoke Newington. Great to see the free paper plaques I provide to shops on Stoke Newington Church Street, listing all the businesses that have traded there, now framed in the shops of Array @arraystorelondon. 136 Stoke Newington Church Street, vacant for the past two years, is set to reopen as @one_scoop_store, a vintage and second-hand clothing shop that also operates from 101 Stoke Newington High Street. I was alerted yesterday by a resident of Clissold Crescent to a set of Victorian porch tiles being removed from one of the houses. He managed to save a number of pieces, which he kindly handed to me. Clissold Park, Stoke Newington.
