Anna Laetitia Barbauld (1743–1825), poet, essayist, children’s author and political writer, pictured in a digital reconstruction outside her former home at 113 Stoke Newington Church Street, where she lived from 1802 until her death in 1825. The reconstruction is based on a historical portrait of her, shown in the second image. The Alexandra Theatre, 65-7 Stoke Newington Rd. Designed by Frank Matcham (1854-1920) who also designed the Hackney Empire. Built in 1897, closed in 1950, derelict till the early 1960s when it was pulled down and Alexandra Court housing block was built on the site. Queen Elizabeth’s Walk, Stoke Newington in 1822. Queen Elizabeth’s Walk, Stoke Newington in 1900 looking north with Clissold Park on the left. Research carried out last year into the early history of Queen Elizabeth’s Walk, Stoke Newington, revealed that St Mary’s Villa at No. 8, shown in the second image, was the first house built on the street, rather than Fairview Cottage at No. 14, as previously believed. The former Vogue Continental Cinema at 38 Stoke Newington High Street, pictured here after decades of closure, with its vertical VOGUE sign still in place. Three historic parish boundary markers in Clissold Park, behind the 393 bus stop opposite Clissold Road. Two belong to Stoke Newington Parish and date from 1876, while the third belongs to South Hornsey Parish and bears the dates 1859 and 1887. Historically, half of Clissold Park lay within South Hornsey. 1948: Looking south from Clissold Park across Stoke Newington Church Street, showing the demolition of Paradise Bridge near Clissold Crescent, close to the present-day 393 bus stops. The New River had flowed beneath Church Street at this location since its opening in 1613. 69 Winston Road, Stoke Newington. Note the old N postal district designation, used before 1917. The Weaver’s Arms pub on the corner of Stoke Newington High Street and Cazenove Road, at No. 2 Stamford Hill. The publican at the time was J. J. Lara. The building has since been converted into flats, with a shop occupying the ground floor. Stoke Newington Midsummer Festival guides from the 1990s. Stoke Newington Cycling Club outside the Swan pub Upper Clapton, 1886. View east along Aden Terrace towards Clissold Crescent (formerly Park Lane). This stretch of the New River was filled in during the early 1950s and has been occupied by allotments ever since. Stoke Newington Church Street, 1997. Marks & Spencer, 156 Stoke Newington High St (1914-1972). Now Sports Direct.
